Did my first tow this weekend, @6,000lbs of boat and trailer + 3 men and gear. Was having trouble the week before with low end power, dealer checked it out; said it might have been fuel OR the ECM adjusting to my driving style. Anyway, after 4 hours of highway and in town towing the zoom seems to be back. I don't get it, but the low end I had lost reappeared during the return trip from the Jersey shore and I couldn't be happier waytogo . Go figure

Yeah, now it just feels GOOD :D !
Like a real truck SHOULD waytogo !
At night, I want to go out and sleep in it so I can wake up and listen to the engine while I have my coffee. Is this a crush? Maybe I should call Dr. Phil

Welcome to my trucks personality. I do not tow on a regular basis so from what I have learned the computer de-fuels as it does not seem to be in a loaded condition as to a truck that is used hard everyday does not go through this lesser fuel situation.
Every time I pull something heavy for a few hours the power comes right back and feels fantastic but unless I tow regularly it does not last .

i think your theory is right on this. my 04.5 does nto smok hardly at al UNLESS!!!... i am at cruise cont. for 30 min or more. when i stomp on it to pass... SMOKE SHOW!! and im not talking a little puff... im talking a nice long trail..... then the computer takes in, does its job and adjusts everything out. i hammer down on my truck all the time.. thats why i went through tires in 24k miles.... waytogo

Yep ! I get little to no smoke most of the time but while towing I can get it to let a plume of smoke out the pipe.
I hope a fuel/timing box will keep the power on tap at all times ???

My dad's HO does the same thing. It will smoke if it gets bogged just a little while in tow.

Now hold on guys...let me make sure I get this right.

You are saying that the computer defuels itself and actually lowers the power output when it "feels" there is no load? But, when the computer senses that there is mass being drug behind it that it makes the fueling more aggressive and actually increases power output?

For one I've never noticed anything like this with my '01 S.O. or my dad's H.O.

Two, I have heard of something similar to what you guys are describing and it is called power bulging. But, I've only heard of it in ag equipment and it's only a temporary "bulge" in power that doesn't last for more than a few moments. Mainly it was designed for, from what I know, is when a tractor is pulling an implement and hits a section of ground that is extra hard and requires more power to get the implement through it or a combine or chopper hitting a dense spot of crop. Never have I heard of it being something that is maintained over a long period of time.

I'm very interested in this, as I did see my dad's H.O. smoke pulling the trailer but figured it was due to the weight and him bogging the truck just a little too hard, which was the only time it would do it.

If I pull something heavy for several miles/hours and I shut the truck off , the next time I crank it the motor has a different tone at idle and the power level is up and noticeable to passengers. The first few times this happened I just thought it was all in my head but after reading for months on the world wide web I found that the computer is doing what it was designed to do.

    Real world example :
My partner in crime John ( NEVRENUF ) and I were towing his 1991 Crew Cab V-3500 and I decided to test this situation out. We started out our trip in Mobile ,AL. and power was acceptable but not impressive but I did not say a thing . Towards Birmingham , AL. we stopped for fuel . Once we were back on I-65 I laid into the throttle while going up a nice grade and John was talking on the phone and stopped the conversation to ask me " What the hell did you do to the truck! " . The motor had a much different moan/pitch under load and pulled so much harder than it usually does.
This is not a one time example - it will do this like clock work every time but always after a week or so the truck looses its power and goes back to the lame mode until the next time.

Man, I'm glad it's not just me! :doah:

This engine has Jekyll/Hyde personalities.

Sometimes Dr. Jekyll kinda' schlogs along, rattlin' and buzzin' and not really showin' anything until the turbo wakes up (over 2,200). But if I drive it hard ( WOT 3,000 rpm shifts), especially on a grade, then Mr. Hyde runs smoother and alot stronger for a while.
