I would like to know what Ford and their friends at Navistar are doing to solve these problems with the 6.0 Powerstroke. It seems that all years 2003-2005 have been affected. At the Dieselstop website there is one picture of a 6.0 with pieces of broken internal engine parts in the oil pan. They think that there was no oil being feed to the engine. If I was in the market for a new truck(1-2 years)I would consider a GMC with the Duramax option which I just test drove and I must admitt it will tow/haul what you put behind it very easily. It does have voits.I hear that each side is blaming each other, but that same engine in a International/Navistar truck seems to work without any or very little problems.Ford should use Internationals electronics.Joe waytogo
Ford is using International's electronics starting in the '05 trucks. One reason you see more trashed PSDs than other engines is that there are so many more of them out there, there are more of them then Cummins and D-Maxes combined. I'm not saying the 6.0 hasn't had more than it's share of problems, but you can find the same stories about D-maxes and Cummins engines too. Personally I think that a big part of the problems that the 6.0 had in the PSDs is a result of the tunes that Ford tried to saddle them with to try to keep them quiet and such. For every messed up truck you hear about on the internet, there are a million more trouble free ones on the road...
<Edit for spelling errors> Hmmm, I don't think that is quite accurate. There may be more PSDs on the road than DMax+Cummins combined (no idea, haven't actually looked at the stats), but I seriously doubt there are more 6.0 PSDs. And the older PSDs only had relatively minor problems like "cackle" and mostly nuisance stuff. But the introductory 6.0s certainly seem to have WAY more than their share of problems. It may be Ford programming that is the issue, I've heard that several times but no idea how accurate it may be. I also agree that one should be aware that the "ratio of bad engines" is highly skewed on the internet for a variety of reasons, but I still think anyone should be cautious when looking at the 6.0 trucks. When guys on TDR (Cummins site) report huge failure rates in Ford or GM engines, you should be very suspect of their statements. And the ratio of failures reported on sites like TDS (Ford site) are going to be way higher than the general population. But when even the "Ford Guys" are ranting about the huge numbers of failures, that is a huge warning flag to me. For instance, back in 2001 when TDR and TDS were rampant with "Aluminum heads! LOL! What a joke! I know a dealer that has 20 dead DMax trucks out back with blown head gaskets!", the GM sites were full of happy owners saying "Where is this dealership?" and getting no answers because it didn't exist. This is a bit different to say the least… I have heard that the new 6.0 PSD has changes that should correct the "problems", and I really hope that this is the case, but I would still be very cautious personally.
Internationals electronics I read on the Dieselstop site that Ford will notor can't use Internationals electronics because by doing so Ford would be giving away their secrets about the Torqshift automatic transmission. Also i've seen other problems with the 6.0 Powerstroke that are not electronics related like engine casting faults and problems with the auto trans itself.Joe
