Who all has changed there own fuel filter? Is there anything special I need to do? Where do you buy them, Dealer? Napa?

I am leaving next week for a long trip and need to get this done this weekend along with a diff oil change.

    Thanks,

It's a piece of cake. I've changed mine a couple of times. You need about a 1" socket (can't remember exactly), an extension, and a ratchet. Loosen the cap, drain the fuel and water out of the housing through the petcock, and change the element.waytogo

You can get the filter through nearly any parts store. I sell the Amsoil brand filters and use them myself.

What type of oil do you plan on using in your diff?

Napa Gold filters aren't bad. They are reboxed Wix filters. To meet Cummins specs though you probably need a Fleetguard or one of the authorized replacements. Your local Cummins dealer or Freightliner dealer probably has them.

The dealer will rape you on filters. They dealer just did the LP conversion in my 98 and did a filter swap. $97.00 to replace a fuel filter  . The filter was $41 by itself. I bought a Fleetguard from Geno's Garage for $14. Mopar filters are Fleetguard with a Dodge box. Tell me that isn't just plain WRONG.

Well I wanted to put Amsoil in my diffs, but due to time constraints I can't wait for shipping.

What weight is recommended? I have a LS in the rear....Thanks:)

Only recommend Fleetguard filters for fuel.

On a 3G dodge it's easy. You just unscrew the top of the canister, pull the lid off, the filter comes out with the lid. Pop the filter and o-ring off the lid and put the new one on, screw it back down. No reason to drain any fuel or anything like that.

Yeah, takes all of 3 minutes. Might take longer for you since you are kinda short and have to climb inside the engine compartment :D

There is a petcock at the bottom of the filter bowl with a hose that runs towards the bottom of the truck. This is where the bowl collects any water that may come from the tank. That is what the petcock is for. It's up to you if you want to drain it or not.

The filter setups are the same on the later 2nd and 3rd gen trucks.

85/140 Severe Gear. Why can't you wait? Your trip right? I'd wait and do it after the trip.

Well because the trip is more than 3K miles, I guess the diffs could wait. I might just swap gear oil again when I get back. I was at the parts store the other day and they had some sort of synthetic can't remember off hand I think Mobil? Anyways it was $15 a quart!!!!! WTF, that's a lot of dough for a quart of gear oil:eek:

Oh ya I picked up a fleetguard filter at my local Cummins parts distibutor. Took me like 3 places that carried stuff for other than the big rigs.

I've done it before and haven't ever had water. I'm not too worried about it, if the light comes on, maybe I'll get out and drain it  With diesel costs I don't want one teaspoon being wasted :doah:
