I picked up some parts today and the owner of the store had an '02 Dodge cummins 2wd auto. He claimed he was going through brakes every 25K or so. How many miles are you guys getting out of your Dodge trucks with an auto? I was really impressed with my truck's brake wear. It had brand new brakes when I bought it and after 8K and a few towing trips with no trailer brakes I noticed almost no brake wear when I had new tires put on a month ago. My K5 went through brakes every 15K. :doah: So what mileage are you getting? Are you impressed/satisfied/disapointed with your Dodge's brakes? Dodge manual owners, Feel free to post up your brake mileage but please don't turn this into a "manuals are bettter" post. Faster wearing brakes with an auto are part of the package with any auto equipped vehicle.
My '98 didn't wear the fronts hardly at all, but it literally ATE rear brakes AND drums. In the first years I had it, the rear drums had to be replaced around 6 times or so due to warping under warranty. I kept telling those dip-wads at the service center that something was wrong and that it seemed to be doing all it's braking in the rear. I never had control issues due to that rear anti-lock brakes, but it sure seemed logical. But they claimed it only needed YET ANOTHER set of drums, or they wanted to just turn them which I absolute forbid them to do considering the history and the miles (usually way less than 5k on any given set of drums). The last time I went in they were just going to do it again, but I was running close on the warranty. Again, just wouldn't listen so I dug in my heels, and I guess you guys can imagine what that's like. By the time I got done with them that time, and I thought I was more than patient leading up to it, the national D/C office was involved and they replaced every single part except the hard lines from the master cylinder back including the entire ABS system. Magically, it never warped another drum after that...
Mine is a manual but it does get mostly in town type miles of constant stop and go and I have over 81,000 on it with the original front pads . I check them every time I rotate the tires and it is time for pads this month. My rear pads are still looking new. I am very impressed with the life of the brakes on this truck ! Tom P.S. Out of respect for RJF's request I will not mention the bennefits of a manual tranny and brake life span....... Edit: I actually ended up getting 93,000 out of the original front pads . I decided to go until the squeelers started sounding off and it took another year of driving to totally wear them down. I am very impressed indeed !
WOW! 81K is great. waytogo The reason why I requested that is I think everyone on this board already knows that one of the benifets of the manual is engine braking, so there is no reason to discuss it. waytogo
My 03 needs new pads in the rear..... 22K miles, and only 1K of that was me :doah: Don't know what the PO did (lockem up?) There wasn't an installed brake controller, so maybe he towed a heavy trailer with no brakes? I will see when I change mine out how long they last me.
At 55,000 miles, I had to do a complete brake job. I had the Wagner Severe Service Heavy Duty pads installed. They had a lifetime warranty. At 145,000 I had a caliper stick on the right front wheel. When the brake pads were removed, they all still had a 1/4" of pad left with the exception of the inside pad on the right side. It had 1/8". Did not wear the pads out, and the rotors were not cut from the pads. Put new calipers, Wagner Pads, and rotors in. So if your truck has low miles, I would recommend these pads early. You might be able to wear them out prior to the other equipment failing. If so, the pads are free. Dave
Our '94 ate brakes like no tommarow, especially rear drums. We did 2 complete brake jobs on it before we traded it in at 80K and had the rears done themselves two more times. They were needed again when we traded it in.
if you tow heavy with them we got about 20k on the fronts before a caliper would **** up, and eat the pad and rotor near instantly. 30 k on rears before they ahwre almost to the rivits on a 98 4x4. seems like the heavy 4wd trucks eat calipers all the time up front at work. see lots of them, and have gotten good enough and rigged a tol where i can acually cut the front rotors of a 4wd dually while its mounted to the truck as taking it apart and dealing with the stupid dopdge captured rotor BS crap.
Brakes Looked Good I have 71000 miles on my 02. I recently pulled the front wheel off and still had 40-50% on the pads....Most of the miles are hwy but there is a lot of back country down grades and quite a few heavily loaded hunting trips on those pads.
Brakes I replaced mine at 55K, I think they were the stockers because they were junk. The rears were in much worst shape then the front ones, Wonder how that happened. :doah: burnout
I bought mine and put new brakes on right off had 167 on it I changed them a few months ago at around 188 but I had a caliper mess up so we'll see how long these last those didn't even make a year I got an auto 2wd
