What all is involved with installing brakes on a trailer that did not come with brakes? I am looking a buying a "kit" for one axle, and wiring. Is it just a "bolt on and wire up" deal. It looks like it should be. I know this might be a dumb question, but until I bought my travel trailer, I never had a trailer with brakes, and did not know what I was missing. Now, I want a set on at least 1 axle of my car hauler. thanks
If the axle on the trailer has the attachment plate for the brake backing plate, its an easy bolt on job. The attachment plate for the backing plate is a small square about 3 or 4 inches that is welded to the axle just behind where the hub sits. It would have 4 holes in it, at least the ones I've seen has that many. If this is missing, I have seen them for sale, but not sure of just how you determine where to weld them. I guess you would need to assemble the hub and backing plate and position them to determine the location.
The axles do have the mounting plate. So I'm thinking it should be just a matter of bolting on the brake assemblies and wiring, right? Thanks for you input.
No, but I'm going to get those when I get the brake kit. What about wiring? is it just the 7 way plug/wire?
