I think that it's time to do some work to my truck.I have a 2004 3500 srw ext cab 5.9 with 276000 km on it.The muffler has a hole the size of a baseball and the tail pipe it falling a part.I pull my 28 ft fith wheel around alot in the summer and a 6 ton dump trailer full of firewood most of the year.I would like to know what kind of mods will give me some more power and better fuel eco as well.Any ideas?

Okay, first off you might want to take a look at a performance exhaust to replace the hole in your stock one. I have run both Bully Dog and MBRP exhausts. I would recomend the MBRP since it comes in T-304 stainless and is good forever. Next I would recomend a stage 2 air intake by AFE. I have run both AFE and Bully Dog but the AFE is the superior unit. Larger in size and more air volume. Both of these two modifications are going to give you better economics and more power. Air flow should be addressed first. This also paves the way any computer tuning you may want in the future.

Let us know what you chose and how well it worked for you.

First off you should address the exhaust and replace that baseball hole you have in your current exhaust. I run a MBRP exhaust in the T 304 stainless steel and would recomend it to anyone. Next you should adress the intake side of the motor. Again I run a AFE stage 2 and would recomend it as well. Both of these modifications are the basics for further modifications you may want to do in the future. I would also recomend a good set of guages. With an automatic you will want a tranny temp guage along with a EGT and a boost. These are the starting point for any engine mods.

Let us know what you do and how it worked.

MBRP is built in Canada. Good kits.

AS for the intake, look at something Dry. Oiled filters will collect a bunch of dirt, which is good, but you will be forever cleaning it.

Exhaust, yup, get the stock junk outta there. Why the hole? Rotted out or did it get punctured?

Next step is a tuner or chip. Something in the 60-100hp range if mileage is the target. Quadzilla XZT+ or an Diablosport Power Puck are great entry level chips for reasonable prices. The Smarty is a great option, allows you do set the level, adjust for tire size, ect. So does the Diablosport Predator. The Smarty is the most expensive of these options. You will want to add a pyrometer (at least) if you add a chip or tuner.

The Juice seems like a nice option if you don't have any gauges. I have been running the Quad Std for a while now, and have no issues. I usually run on the 60hp setting, and it has helped my mileage when I can keep my foot out of it.

I like my AFE Stage 2 w/ the dry filter.

And get an Edge Juice / Attitude... I had one on my 05 and loved it. That way you won't have to buy gauges separate.

Good choice on the MBRP, the AFE, the guys are telling you about is sound advise and will be going on my truck next.

I also intalled a GPD Intake Horn on my truck for a few reasons:

    1. It is bigger than stock and flows right up there with the others.

    2. It allows perfect stock replacement mounting points like the stock unit.

    3. And it came tapped from the factory...like the others of course.

    4. A lot cheaper and it allows you to mount there GPD fuel fiter assembly.

So... the exhaust and Intake horn along with Royal Purple in the diffs got me better low end power/torqe (in the seat feel) and 1 MPG better and can't wait to get the AFE stage 2 DRY filter.
That is what I see after 4 fillups and hand calc. just my .02
