What are the differences? I know that the injector design is different, but what are the differences? I have a friend with an '03 LB7, and is on the mostly third set of injectors (with the last set being the "new" design) in 140,000 miles, and this last set with only 35,000 is showing signs of problems. He was asking me about the LLY, and I am not sure.

Beside the LB7 internal injectors filling the pan full of diesel and the LLY having external injectors...I don't know of any other differences.

From what I recall, the only significant diff is internal/external injectors. LLY is faster/easier/moderately cheaper to change injectors on, but the "new design" injectors are little if any better than the old ones. Bottom line (from what I read) is Boche designed and spec'd them for Euro diesel that is much "cleaner" than what we have, so they don't hold up due to VERY tight tolerances eroding. Extra filtration is supposed to help, but strangely some GM dealerships (and possibly official GM policy) use additional filtration and lift pumps (to reduce aeration which contributes to erosion) to void warranties. I've decided to change my stock fuel filter frequently and lean on that 200k injector/engine warranty rather than loose it on additional filtration that I have to pay extra for and will possibly void that 200k warranty.

I was hoping that you would respond. Do you know the details with the 200k warranty? What years does it apply? BTW, you know the truck I am referring to. It belongs to Mark, who was with us in NM, and owned the green '03 GMC Duramax.

Yeah, that's what I figured. He's had lots of trouble (including that trip).

The warranty only applies to 01-02 last I heard. Also heard some say it would apply to the last LB7s that came out in 03, but not confirmed. Also heard it was likely to be extended to the '03+ LLYs, but never saw anything say it was fact. I'm afraid I quit following it like I did for a while.

So far the "special policy" only is for 01-02 trucks. I am hoping that it will be extended to the 03's.:(

The other major difference that I don't think was mentioned is that the LLY went to a Variable Vane Turbo, a la the new 6.0 Powerstroke, and the LLY has EGR and a catalytic converter in all 50 states now, whereas the LB7 was only EGR/cat in California, and had a conventional turbo.

Was there a power difference between the 49 state LB7 and the Kali version?

James has your friend tried any fuel additives? I think Burt had a problem with his and a additive helped.

There was no rated difference, though the cat will increase EGT's when towing heavy. Mine is doing a great job of taking up space on the side of the house right now. :D
