Are there any noticeable signs that a lift pump is beginning to fail. I have noticed some extra clatter at idle from the front of the truck. Anyone know what it is. At higher elevations it goes away. My truck has 114,000k.

What year truck? Usually when they fail they will throw a code, but not always. If in doubt, have the pressure checked or install a Fuel Pressure gauge.

might be time for a valve adjustment... 100k is what cummins recomends. i did mine at 50k just because i had one that was further out than the rest... i could hear it. it was still in limitations though...

Mine started surging one night for about 2 seconds and then just died.
    It was the lift pump.
I went and purchased the FASS pump from DPP and it works great! kinda loud but its pushin 26 PSI.
