I know on the 98.5-02(3?) Cummins the Lift Pump was a notorious problem, but is it something I should worry about as i put miles on my '05?

From what I have heard the new IP and LP are much more reliable. But I have also heard of a few having some problems here and there, but not NEAR as common as the 2nd gens. Not positive though, just from what little I have read.

Not as common on the 3rd gens as on previous models but it doesn happen with the inline pumps. Your 05 however has an in tank pump and should be good to go for a long while. My 03 has an inline and people have had them go out as early as 30k but mines at 107k with no problems, yet... I carry a spare though.

So if the truck has an in tank pump it's in a better position for reliability then? Is 2003 the only year for an inline pump?

05's got the in tank pump and if anyone has an 03-04.5 that has a pump failure the dealer will retrofit it to the new in tank style, but you have to pay for it of course unless it's under waranty still.

The in tank pumps stay cooler due to the fuel surrounding them and thus they last longer.

I have a o1 dodge diesel and I had to replace my lift pump at 109K I also bought a pusher pump for a gas motor , it works the same way,out of a magazine for 100 dollars and it runs me at about 16 psi all the time even with my chip on 120 it doesn't go below about7 psi hammering on it.

I have a friend that just installed on the frame rail, a Carter Marine Electric Fuel pump, made for diesel. Don't have a number to post, will check. He got it from NAPA.

70% of all CP3's leak. Mine leaks, I'm at 107k and it doesn't bother me.
