Does anyone know if the problems of overheating and bad injectors been resolved yet by GM? I'm working on a deal now for a new '05 2500HD Duramax-Allison 4x4 reg. cab and reports of these 2 problems in various forums have me a little concerned. I think that GM trucks currently have the most to offer for the $, and the fit/finish/quality/specs are right up there with the rest, but the Cummins seems to have fewer complaints. My other choice would be a Dodge 2500 Cummins with the six speed, two of which I have located. Any thoughts or recommendations?

The injectors are still an issue, but not nearly as bad as the internet hype makes it out to be. Some have trouble, some fewer still have ongoing problems, but most it seems have pretty good luck, relatively comparable to what you see in the other 2 Domestic light diesels. Basically it seems to me a bit better than the 6.0 PSD, a bit worse then the 600 CTD (so far). Seems most injectors fail within the first 12k miles or so if they are going to, or they last just fine. I know of trucks climbing toward 200k with not a single problem. I also know of trucks with far less and more than one set of injectors, why, I don't know. The newer style (LLY) motor has more accessible injectors making repair a bit cheaper if needed, but it's still not cheap or easy.

I also think that all the high pressure common rail systems (all the big 3 for the last few years) are going to be dealing with the some types of problems not seen in older diesels. Super high rail pressures (over 30k psi IIRC) and junk diesel like we get in the US is just a recipe for trouble.

I'm not aware of an overheating problem though. My '02 LB7 routinely tows 15k in the Phoenix 110*+ temps with never a sign of over heating in the Alli or DMax.

The LLY motors in the 04.5s had an overheating problem from what I have read. They are not real sure on the 05 models as this is the first summer for them. I have a 05 and have towed my buggy around a bunch and so far I have not had any issues. The motor does like to run right at 210 and tranny right at 190. These temps are fine with me.

The injectors are an issue still but I like baddog feel that the internet has made all of these problems larger than they really are.
THe LB7 motors have the extended injector warrenty and the LLY is to new to know yet. Dodge and Ford are right behind GM with their own problems with the same basic things.

I think you are making a good choice and will be real happy with it.
