I might be buying a 6.9 tonight. It is an 86 extended cab 2x4, with 130,000 and a banks turbo on it. The truck has some rust around the bed wells, and needs an exhaust. He lost his license so he is asking 995 for it. What should i look for when buying it. Also, i wanted a 4x4, but this is such a good deal. do any of you drive your 2x4s in the snow, and on farms and a little mud, and how do they go? Also, how will this tow my 86 k10 4x4 wheeling truck? Does anybody make a lift kit for these? and how do i make it more capable for driving in the snow, and on muddy terrain?
I wouldnt buy it if it was me first if all it wont go in the snow mud or farms it will sit and spin, been there done that.Secondly the price seems a bit to low for a Banks equiped truck it should be able to haul your rig but I dont think they make a lift kit for two wheel drives that old you could try a locker or lsd if the stock units shot but aside from that and tires is really all you can do.I honestly dont recomend two wheel drive trucks for far mwork unless you have a capable four wheel drive to pull it out when it gets stuck.
As for what to look for bad wires or wireing oil and tranny leaks diff leaks major body rot around the cab make sure all the lights work and the brakes and tires are decent.
The cab and frame is all solid, and i think i can now get the truck for around 500. He said it leaks a little oil from what he thinks is the oil pan. Is this common? Also, i have new fenders, doors and a hood, the only problem is that there for an 87. Is there any way i can make these fit?
They will fit just fine as for the leak yeah its common esspecially on a older vehicle.I would tell you to take caution as it is a five hundrend dollar rig if you can get a friend who is a mechanic and have em look at it with you .
thanks for the info, he the origonal price was 2500, but he has legal fees to pay for his license loss, and needs cash quick, so he brought it down to 995, and i have bargained him down to 500.
Well post us some pics once you get it of course I am the worse about posting pics and congrats on the new truck
I will post some pics. I am going to drive it saturday, and if everything goes right, i will buy it. Any known problems for these trucks? Also, it has 13000 on the motor, which i know is not too much for it, but how soon would it need an injector pump, it starts up fine, when it was around 40 degrees, he just let the glow plugs cycle and it fired right up. Also, it did not blow any smoke. Does anyone know how i can make the front end sit level with the back? if i Get some replacement heavy duty coils will this level it out?
Well good luck on the test drive the big problm I ran into was the wireing harness wanting to catch fire on the passenger side inner fender.Doing a rebuild on the front should get everything back in place plus make it drive a bit better. On the injector pumps look around you might find one on ebay cheap or from one of the vendors pages try diesel nut.
it does not need an injector pump, just wondering around how many miles people replace them. I will be using this to work, hauling scrap metal, landscaping and towing a bobcat. Also, it will be used to tow my wheeling truck. I plan on buying it for hopefully 500, but 700 max. I will be putting a dyonmax exhaust on it, converting it to a 90 style front end, putting a flat bed on it, new heavy duty springs up front, a 3" bl and some 33" all terrains. I priced it out, and including buying it i can do it for under 2500. Sound like a good deal, and sound like it will suit my needs?
it should work out well for the lift fabtech might just have one or some other companys you might be able to find under the pre runner catagory
