I have an 05 Kaufman 20 ft (18 ft deck 2 ft dove tail) steel deck car trailer. I am trying to figure the empty weight of my trailer. I was thinkinjg like 2500 lbs but my initial registration from over a year ago says 5464 lbs. Does that sound right to you guys? It is dual 4000 lbs axles with brakes on both axles. The reason I need to know is I am supposed to go get a cab and front clip for a freind but I cannot take my truck so we need to take his vehicle which is much less than my 2500 HD. Thanks for any help.

Kaufman site shows a max weight of 8000 LBS (trailer and load combined) for your trailer so the 5464 sounds close. my car trailer can only carry 6000 and weighs 3250 empty. even if you had a half ton pickup you should be fine with what your wanting to carry. but dont try it with an S-10 or Ford Ranger.

Well, an 8K trailer that weighs 5464 empty leaves very little weight for cargo. My 18 ft trailer weighs 1500 empty, so I'd say your probably around 2000# tops! Best bet is to go weight it on a scale.

Unfortuanately its not uncommon to have a large heavy trailer with way to light of axles under it. A 20' trailer should have two 7000lb axles under it not 4000lb ones. My neighbors 30' goose neck weighs 6500 lbs and only has two 7000lb axles. Doesn't leave much cargo weigh. alot of truck stops have scales where you can weigh your trailer for about $10. Thats the best way to know exactly what the trailer weighs.

That type of trailer sounds like it should be in the 2000.lb wt. bracket, and you should be able to haul 3 times that wt. on it.to be sure take it to a scale, and if you live in flat country haul what you want to,but not so in the hills with a half ton,

Our 2 trailers that are rated for 7-8000 lbs weigh 2000lbs each. even our 14000 rated only weighs 3500.

My 40' Gn weighs 9100 by itself, the 18' and 20' car haulers I carry weigh around 2,000-2400 depending how they are built, and have a GVWR of either 7,000 or 10,400#
