I just bought a 2000 F350 with the PSD last week. What kind and weight of oil should I use? How often do I change the fuel filter, and what do you recommend? Any other tips?

    Thanks!

I go 7-9K on oil. I would think the PSD should come close to the same mileage.

What brand and weight of oil do you run?

Thanks for the help - the truck is stock for now.......I shouldn't even be thinking of doing anything as I have two other toys for that!

I run Exxon XD3 Extra 15W-40. It's 50,000 mile oil in commercial applications with routine filter changes. 15 40 is pretty much the standard viscosity in the diesel world. I think it's silly to change diesel oil under 5K or so. They hold a lot more oil than a gas engine and usually have better filtration systems.

But....if you're a guy that likes changing at 3K with your diesel.....I'd love to get my hands on your "old" oil...I'd dump that fresh oil into something around the ranch. ;)

Seriously though, the best way to figure out how long you can go on an oil change is to have it tested. I wish I would have tested mine, I changed it at 8K and the oil still looked and smelled good, heck I could even see a slight tint of bronze with a little sun light shining through it. There are other factors to oil changing such as your driving conditions. If a lot of short trips are performed than that will have an effect on how long the oil lasts, oil doesn't like going through lots of heat cycles. Doing a lot of freeway mileage will help extend your drain too.

The powerstroke oil does so much work in both the 7.3l and 6.0l engines that they need to be changed every 3500 miles. delo400 15/40 or shell rotella 15/40.

Ill gladly send you the oil that comes out of my 6.2 at 3000 miles, but i guarantee you wont want to run it in anything when you see, smell and feel it.

The people that i know with 7.3 powerstrokes all say between 3K and 5K for changes, but then again they all work their trucks pretty hard.

I would tell anyone to to put 10 to 15 thousand on a oil change.they look like they need to be changed at 10 miles. Olis loose there there ability to trap the particulates (ie) soot in 3000 to 5000 miles so running them past this only causes wear.

Congrats on the new truck, you will have tons of fun with it!

The best oil for the PSD is the Shell Rotella T. With all the various fittings and orings i would stay away from synthetic oils. The synthetic will cause leaks all over the place. http://129.33.208.17/site_layout/parts/September2005/IMP/Shell.html

The fuel filter should be changed about every other 7-10k. I usually change mine every 5k. the best fuel filters are made by Racor and Wix. You can commonly find the wix at napa and many other auto stores. Wix also makes filters for other brands as well, like the O'reilly fuel filter. At napa you will pay on avereage $30 for a wix filter, but you can go to o'reilly and get the same filter made by wix for $20. The racor filter are probably the best! Thats what international uses and Racor also make filters for jet airliners! You can find the racors for about $17 at http://www.dieselpage.com/racrefpl.htm

I would also reccommend (its really a must) that you use a fuel additive such as stanadyne or diesel kleen (grey bottle). These additives help lube the fuel system and injectors. Diesel fuel is being made with less sulfer nowadays causeing premature failures on injectors. The fuel additives prevent that from happening. You will be able to tell the difference right off the bat. Your engine will run smoother and better and it will increase your milage about 1-2 mpg. **note neither Stanadyne or Diesel Kleen is better than the other, they both are top notch**

Depending on how many miles are on it, change your antifreeze. The 2000 models came with the standerd green coolant. Do not change to the gold coolant because you will have o ring failure in your water pump!!! The 2000 models have different orings than the 02-up models. The 2000 orings will eat away with the gold coolant.

If you change your coolant, make sure you get a couple of bottles of SCA's for the coolant. SCA is the additive that prevents pitting and cavitation.

ps, if you decide to fluch and fill with gold coolant, no sca's are needed, they are already in it.
I know several people who have change coolant from green to gold without problems, but ford says "dont do it"

Shell Rotella T engine oil every 3-5k miles(international dealer says 7-10k), fuel filter every 7-10k miles or as needed, its al up to you, and a little fuel additive (everytime you get fuel)

    waytogo

from what ive heard Rotella T is one of the worst oils to buy the additve package is weak at best. My recomendation is to take an engine oil sample religiously every time you change your oil and send it into a lab to be tested it may cost you a few bucks but from my experince it will save you time and money in the long run they will also tell you if you can strech the period between oil changes

Ive heard form a couple of guys in the Ford dts that Rotella T will cause injector problems, and the only engine oil specially made for the stroke is motorcraft. I dont know if its true, but I run motorcraft everything, its been good for 180K, dont mess with success I say.

While I have never heard or witnessed that before, anything is possible. International actually promotes the use of rotella T. You have to remember that Ford doesnt make the powerstroke, international does. rotellaT is the standerd in oil for farm tractors and big rigs as well. Like I said, the Powerstroke is an International engine not fords and IH endorses the use of rotella t. as a matter of fact, they sell it too.waytogo

Congrats on the new truck. I jumped into the diesel world myself back in 2003 when I needed a bigger truck to tow my Vette around with. I ended up getting a 2003 F350 with the 6.0L turbo diesel. I now have over 50,000 miles on it and have really enjoyed having the truck.

I use AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5w30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil in my F350, but AMSOIL also makes these 15w40 oils which are suitable for your truck:
AMSOIL SAE 15w40 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil
AMSOIL 15w40 Synthetic Blend Diesel Oil

AMSOIL rates the two synthetic oils for 15,000 miles/1 year of use in severe duty (such as towing or dusty conditions), and the Synthetic Blend for OEM change intervals. I've been changing mine at about 10,000 miles.

AMSOIL also has just released a new line of
AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters with nano-technology which are also usable for 15,000 miles in severe use. Part number for the 7.3L is EAO99.

Not sure what the fuel filter change out requirement is for the 7.3L. It is every 15k miles for the 6.0L.

The 7.3 has a problem with foaming of the oil. To correct this Ford specs oils that have extra anti-foam added in them. Shell Rotella T 15w40 is probably the most common one used. If your oil don't contain enough anti-foam you will have problems with the injection system cause it don't like foam in its control oil supply. I run the standard oil change interval of 7500 miles between oil & filter changes. Also don't forget to purge your fuel filter a couple of times a year to dump any water that collects there. Water don't play well with injectors, the dump valve is on the back side and it only takes a few seconds shot to get the job done.

I have a 2000 F250 SD 4WD that I bought new with 120K miles on it now. I change the oil/filter every 5K miles with Shell Rotella 15W-40W and Fram filters, and change the fuel filter every 10K. I also refill the fuel bowl with SEAFOAM fuel additive every time I change the filter. I also serviced the tranny and coolant as required. I don't remember what type of coolant I used when I did the change but as a previous post stated, I just recently replaced my water pump because of the seals.burnout
