Hi guys, I have a 96 Chevy C 2500 sclb 2wd. It is the unofficial "HD", I am towing a 30' 5ver that weighs about 6000 dry. I pull about twice a month everywhere from 45 mins to 12 hrs away. Truck pulls ok but def needs more power. What should I do? I only have about $1000 to spend. Should I put some parts on it? What parts? Or should I sell and try to buy a better truck? Thanks in advance for the help

I guess you first have to ask yourself do you have a budget for a better truck? That will help you in deciding which way to go.

I could get about $4000 in trade in for my truck, and possibly get about $2000 cash to add to that. I have been looking and it seems to be hit or miss if a "bigger" truck at that price would be worth it. I like the answering a question with a question though. Very philosophical! Say I were to keep my truck, what would be the first step, bigger rear end gear? Or like TBI spacer, cold air intake, flex fan, stuff like that. Thanks for the reply, I haven't seen a whole lot of people talking on here.

What motor, trans, gear ratio do you have in your truck now?

Truck has Vortec 5.7 TBI, stock, 4L80E tranny, and 3.73 gears. I have it stuck in my head that the rear end is the issue. I guess I just need someone who knows something about trucks to say what they would do. Thanks for the consideration. Wish we could get a few more people in here to join in.

You could go down to 4.10 or 4.88 but then your millage would start to go the other way and 3.73 although not ideal is not "too" bad. Maybe start with a free flowing exhaust, headers etc., keep in mind it's still a gas powered small block.

you best money spent would be 4.10 R&P install...purely for towing improvement.
