Help! I'm new to diesels, and not quit sure what the problem is. In the last few weeks, my truck started acting like it's not getting fuel after driving it a little ways and turning it off. When I go to crank it again, it turns but wont fire until the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th attempt. It's slowly getting worse. It used to be sporadic, but now it's guaranteed. Also, in the last week it has started to loose power while driving, and then all the sudden it will jump like fuel is once again getting to it.

Background - I changed the fuel filter over 3,000 miles ago. I don't have a fuel pressure guage installed. Truck has over 150,000 miles.

Check your fuel filter again you may have gotten some bad diesel, or some water in it. Also check your rubber fuel lines one may have collapsed on you had it happen on an old 91 dodge.

Inspect your fuel filter, but it's likely a bad lift pump.

Sounds like a bad lift pump to me too, definitly get the lift pump pressures tested before you cause damage to the injection pump.

Sorry if it's dumb, but how do I do that? Also, Can I pull a code even if no dash lights are on?

You will need a pressure gauge that you can read from in the cab, take your fuel pressure reading from after the fuel filter. You want to see no less than 5 PSI at wide open throttle.

The computer will store codes in the computer so have them checked even if your check engine light is not on.

Took it to dodge dealership today, and found out that the VP44 is bad. They said code meant something internal. Researching now on VP44's
