okay, i have the opportunity to buy an "04" 2500 4x4 CTD quad cab w/3"lift for my son, in between good and excellent condition except for what he says is the need for a clutch. he says it is not driveable, although i have not tried to move it out of his back driveway and it only has 47K miles on it. dealer is quoting 1700 bucks to him and i got a quote of 1350.00. my question is this. is there a reason i should steer clear of a manual tranny as its inherent with problems or is this a solid tranny with few if any bugs/issues. i am getting multiple conflicting stories here. the only thing they are all in agreement on is that they are expensive to completely rebuild if you can find someone who will do it.

My question would be, why after only 47000 miles does the truck need a new clutch? What kind of power adders are on the truck or were on the truck? The stock clutch should have lasted a lot longer than just 47000 miles if the truck was stock. The NV-5600 tranny is a good one. It is actually perfered by some to the newer G-56. The only thing that I would caution is to get used to the shift pattern. Reverse is next to 5th gear and can be confused if you are not paying enough attention.

My 04 has the NV5600 and so far I love it. It has performed flawlessly for me. In September I towed to Moab and back from the Bay area and put over 2000miles on it with a GCVW of over 18,000lbs and it held up great. I’ve had my TST as high as 7/7 and haven’t been able to slip the clutch yet. My rig has just over 100k miles on it and to the best of my knowledge still has the stock clutch.

I agree that something sounds funny if the clutch is gone to the point that the truck can’t even be moved after only 47k miles. You might want to steer clear of this particular rig but I wouldn’t think twice about getting a rig with the NV5600.

I have heard of lubrication issues on some of the earlier ones... but by 04 you should be fine.

And yes, either the previous owner had a ton of power adders or he / she drove like a dummy. Usually a clutch won't need replacing that soon.

The 5600 is a solid unit. Just make sure you overfill it by 2 qts!!!! You should have a total of 6 qts in your 5600. As for the clutch, I agree something is going on there. A stock truck, even drove hard, should not need a clutch already. I would attempt to get the whole story. Also, what is wrong with the clutch? Will it not disengage or is it slipping? Does the pedal bind?

had Daryl at Diesel Specialists here in Vegas replace it with a Sun Coast DD clutch and it's running strong.
as luck would have it, last week on Monday the Torque converter on my "06" went out and left me stranded out on the highway on the way to work. only had 27K on the truck. warranty covered it, but i'm sure not a happy camper. i've been on only three trips of any distance in the truck towing my toy hauler since i've owned the truck, it's a 26 ft Attitude. on two of the trips it was empty. i'm 55, so i don't drive like a teenager, so what gives? i had it in the dealer for all my services and if there was an issue you think when they completely changed all the fluids they would have seen some indication of this problem.

I think you mean South Bend Clutch. Sun Coast builds parts for auto transmissions not manuals.
