The first time I changed the oil (500 miles), when I unscrewed the filter black oil ran down its sides and I had to be careful about not spilling it. I did the second change today (3,500 miles) and no oil ran out of it -- it was only 1/2 full when I removed it!

    What gives

Not to worry, all the ones I've ever changed the oil on do the same including my own. I believe they just get a siphon going, if you let them sit for a while the level falls and if you start changing right after you've stopped running them the oil will be right at the top. I like to wait until it cools down some ;)

Mine will be down a little bit. Not half full, but a little over 3/4. My guess is as the oil cools it needs less area. Expands when hot, contracts when cool. I have never really worried about it. If you really want something to put your mind at ease, drive your truck around for about an hour, get it good and hot, throw an old carboard box or carpet under the filter and crack it loose hot (be careful) and see what happens. My guess is you'll get oil running down the filter. Tightner her back up and you should have no more worries!
