Just wanted to say "HellO"imp: I just bought my first Dodge,Also first Cummins... Its a 2006 2500 SLT 4x4 QC,SB,5.9L HO CTD. 6 spd manual tranny,3:73 axle ratio...It has 16,730 miles.Very good condition. The Used Truck dealer I got it from had it serviced. He said he put Shell Rottella 15w40 in it?? He doesn't know what had been used in the past!!! But I have heard that isn't a good brand to use in this cummins? What do y'all think? I'll be pulling a 31' TT GVW.8,200 lbs,(loaded).(2). What is a good RPM to run this engine at??? I just want to made sure I'm using the best, as I plan to keep this trk for a long time... Any advice will be greatly welcomed. I live in SC. THANKS!!! JB
switch to synthetic next time if you plan on running the truck for may miles and years. i run royal purple 15-40, lots of guys on this site run amsoil wich is excellent oil. red line is excellent as well and the valavoline blue extreme 5-40 is endorsed by cummins...any of these oils are the best, syn oil is better for extreme cold and heat, more $$$$ but well worth it....now for rpm man it all depends on the weight and grade so it will be different all the time, just drive it and have fun.....
Thanks for the info. I think I will go ahead and drain this Rottella out soon an put in the Synthetic. I really like this Cummins...
You'll like it even more once you Amsoil it. Runs smoother, gets a little better mileage. I have an 06 too . . . Amsoil bumper to bumper.
Hey, How long (miles/mos.) do you go between oil & filter changes?? Also, with miles at 17,210 now,is it to soon to chg. to the Amsoil syn. How bout effecting factory warranty, as my trk is still under warranty?? Sorry for all the questions,I'm trying to do my homework... Thanks for the info...
1 year or 15k miles is considered the severe service schedule with AMSOIL on these trucks. You can switch a Cummins to synthetic at 5k to 10k miles, so you are good to go with 17k. AMSOIL will not affect warranty. AMSOIL has been around since 1972, so this isn't a new concept and I've never seen a warranty issues. Questions are good! -Chuck
I am currently running Amsoil in my diffs, tranny, and transfer case - GREAT products. I was waiting until around 20K to switch from the recommended Valvoline Premium Blue to Amsoil in the engine. Will be doing that switch my next oil change. Then I will also be bumper-to-bumper Amsoil. As far as RPM's, they say the sweet spot on these engines is right around 2K. I can tell you that is where I get my best fuel mileage. With the stock tires and at 65 mph, you will be above 2K rpm's. I put on 315 tires and it dropped my rpm's at 65 mph to right at 2K, maybe slightly just under 2K. Since our highway speeds are 65-75 here in NM, and I tend to travel with the traffic, changing the tires was the only way to get close to the sweet spot. Enjoy your truck, have fun with it.
None at all. You have only just broke in that motor, and everything else will just enjoy the new, better oils. I have changed trucks over with 200K+ on the clock and they don't give us any problems.
So what's the scoop with the amsoil bypass kit? Worth it? IF so, why? What part numbers would I need for a COMPLETE kit? From my research it looks like: BMK-11 EaBP-100 BK-1301 What else?
