I was wondering what brand of oil you guys prefer and why. What do you think of Shell Rotella T 15w-40 and Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15w-40? I'm not due for an oil change yet but wanted to get everybodies opinions on this matter. Also what brand filter do you prefer? The truck is a 2000 F-250 Super Duty with the 7.3 PowerStroke. Also what is the oil capacity and how much do I need to buy?

    Thanks in advance

The best oil in my experiance and many others is the Rotella T. It uses 15 qts of oil. And a good oil filter is wix from napa although the motorcrafts are good as well. the o'reilly filters are also made by wix

I second the Rotella, very good oil. I generally run Napa filters too, as they are made by Wix.

Exxon XD3 extra 15/40 with a Napa/wix filter here. I wouldn't reccommend the oil I use though, it's expensive and is overkill in a pickup and I only use it because we have it in bulk. I'd use Rotella, Delvac, or Napa brand 15/40 oil if I was going to buy oil off the shelf.

Mobil Delvac 1300 and Motorcraft filters here. Have had great test results come back. The manual says 15qts though mine is topped out at 14qts.

Wallyworld's Tech2000 brand in 15W40. Apparently its made by Safety-Kleen from recycled oil.

I almost use up a 20L bucket between my PSD and 6.2L.

I'm not too particular on filters. IMO oil & filter change frequency makes more difference. My current filter is a LuberFiner. I'm trying to find a reliable & cheap source for the oversize filter... so far still hit & miss (mostly miss).

    Why hasn't anyone mentioned Amsoil?

Are these other oils just as good? Less expensive? What have I missed here?

I'm new to the diesel scene. Looking for a little education.

    Thanks

I'm an Amsoil dealer, none of these oils that have been listed are even near as good as oil(I didn't read any synthetics listed) mainly due to conventional vs. synthetic. Most people already know that synthetic oils are better so I won't waste typing but if you don't let anyone know or start a new thread and can go from there.

    Amsoil vs. other synthetic.

First off, ANY diesel specific synthetic is going to be better for the most part than any conventional oil. You can't go wrong with any of the synthetic oils.

What I like about Amsoil is that it is the cleanest oil, Amsoil has proven to not only keep an engine the cleanest after miles and miles of service, but to clean up a dirty engine that has had a steady diet of conventional oil with left over deposits.

The second biggest thing is intervals, Amoils claims 25K or one year in an automobile with an Amsoil nanofiber filter. In heavy duty applications I have seen guys run the oil four times that reccommended for a car.

Protection, while Amsoil delivers excellent lubrication that resists high temperatures , most any synthetc is good enough in this catagory, but I will say Amsoil is the better if not the best.

Availability, Amsoil makes so many products that people don't even know about. They make racing oil for top fuelers down to bar and chain lube for your chainsaw. They have a line of lubes specifically designed for ATV's, boats, sleds, and other power sports.
