i am really having trouble picking a programmer for my truck. its a 2004.5 2500 4 door 2wd auto. i pull my 28' toy hauler withit. wieght varies between 8k-10k depending on where i'm going. living in western ohio; pulling mountains is not a concern like it is for some. im not looking for a 200 hp tuner, just a lttle more power and definitely more mpg since this is also a daily driver $3.59/ gallon as this post. it makes plent of power as is, but i still want more and hopefully a couple mpg. i have already replaced the stock muffler with a magnaflow on the stock 4" pipe and a K&n filter in the stock housing and an airaid M.I.T. tube in the intake. planning on a new intake manifold also. any help would be great .thanks.
I have a edge with attitude. It added about 3 miles per gallon. The truck was new with only 500 miles when I added it. The mileage is getting better everyday. At 6200 miles it is 14 in city and 20 on highway trips, hand calculated. My in cab readout says about three miles higher than actual. I leave my box on mileage all the time. We have a 99 2500 also with edge with attitude that works great pulling 14,500 camper.
I'd recommend a TST. If you get the R49 you'll get boost and EGT gauges to. Since you have an auto (assuming it's stock because you didn't mention anything about tranny upgrades) I'd be very careful putting an extra 200hp into the mix...you're liable to grenade that thing easier than you think. My personal opinion, I'd stay away from any "pressure box" programmer until you can beef up the tranny some. Also....I'd swap out that K&N filter as well. If you check TDR there's posts all over the place as to why NOT to use them on a diesel. Good luck!!
I believe he said he's NOT looking for 200hp. Ok, lets talk about some stuff. Do you have gauges right now? If not, then the Edge or TST looks good for you. Nice thing about them is both monitor boost and pyro, and have built in safety features that are user adjustable. Both also include a turbo timer, or cool down timer. Take the key out, lock the doors, the truck will continue to run until it reaches the proper shut down temp and then will shut its self down. Next option is a Smarty, or Diablosport Predator. Both are downloaders and are not adjustable on the fly. Gauges are nessissary with either of these to properly monitor the motor. Quadzilla also has several nice chips available. Those will also require Gauges. So, you have some things to think about, and I think you will find your decision is harder now than before!rotfl
No, i dont have guages yet. that is part of my decision too. i know i want to monitor things, but wasnt sure if i should buy guages and then a programmer or get a programmer that comes with the guages ( digital display screen). i also like the idea of the turbo timer. i have one of those on i wish list too. as of now, i might as well go with the TST because it has EVERYTHING that i want to add and keep me from grenading the thing. also, i will be getting a VB for the tranny but thats after the programmer ordeal. thanks for the help so far guys. as time goes and my diesel experiences increase, i hope to help whoever i can the way you guys are helping me.
mr Genz try checking on the predator stage 2, I've been using them for about 3 years, the stage 2 gives you about 85 more hp and about 100 ft lbs more of torque, it take 5 minutes or less to install ,and does not void warranty ,it improves mpg by 10-15 %,cost about 350 to 400 dollars,if you need more info email me genzplace@peoplepc.com, good luck,I'm running an 07 3/4 ton Big Horn 6 speed,410's I get about 21mpg overall. 14-15 mpg pulling 32' tongue pull,Jayco Eagle tt
I can only comment on the Hypertech as that's the one and only one I've had. I do a lot of towing and that's why I went with the Hypertech downloader. It has 3 settings that add up to 100 hp and 150 lbft of torque, and ALL settings are tow safe. Plus it added about 2 mpg and as a bonus I found mine for about $250 on autoanything.com! About half the price of other downloaders on the market. It also reads/clears trouble codes.
