So tonight i was coming back from dinner and my truck died, i was low on fuel but not compleatly out so i called a friend and had him bring me 5 gallons of diesel, after filling it up still wouldnt start. Tried pulling the fuel lines at the head off to get it primed, after that it fired a few time but still no start, injector#1 was getting fuel, injector 3 and 4 were getting fuel but no were near as much as #1. Im thinking injection pump. truck has 135,000 all original. its an 01 CTD AT If it is an injection pump which should i be looking at to replace it??? THanks for any help
With the truck off, turn the key to the on and then off position 3 times. Where you odometer is, key in the on position, it will probably flash some codes. Hopefully you will only get a 216 code, lift pump failure. Otherwise, the vp44 might be toast. Your looking around $1200 for the pump, plus labor. I would highly suggest a new lift pump if the vp44 is toast. Good Luck! P1688 (M) Internal Fuel Injection Pump Controller Failure Internal problem within the fuel injection pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops. P0251 (M) Fuel Inj. Pump Mech. Failure Fuel Valve Feedback Circuit Problem sensed with fuel circuit internal to fuel injection pump.
Thanks bro, ill check it out today at work, luckly i work at a shop and have tons of tools and knowledge right there. ill mess with it today and see what happens. :doah:
turning the key i got a p1693 with the scaner i got a p0230 which is a "transfer pump fault code" so does this mean i just need a lift pump or injection pump?
So, to try and save some money i threw a 40$ 9psi fuel pump in my truck to see if the injection pump was cooked too and it actually fired so looks like im ordering just a FASS. i guess im lucky.
Sounds like you might have lucked out. You need something to monitor the fuel pressure, even if its just simple red led that come on when fuel pressure drops. I have a gauge, and I can tell when the filters get dirty, the pressure drops on heavy pulls.
Don't drive the truck until you have your new lift pump installed and check fuel pressure. Driving a VP44 truck with fuel pressure issues can cause injector pump damage. I'm sure you already know that, but I'd have to see you be out 2 grand on a new VP when you can avoid it. -Chuck
Dont be supprised if the vp44 fails soon if you drove it long withouot the proper fuel pressure you may have damaged it already. hopefully you got lucky. sorry:doah: John
Im not expecting the injection pump to last too much longer, but so far no blips, misses, or poor running. keeping my fingers crossed
I just went through all of this with my truck. The lifter-pump went out twice before I got smart and bought a conversion kit. The factory kit is worthless. Shortly after that, my injector pump went. It is a spendy mistake, running the truck low on fuel, but at least now I have the components needed to provide extra fuel for upgrades. By the way, 1tontractor, I see that you live in San Jose! I was born and raised there (technically Campbell), went to Del Mar High. Small world.
I am currently looking into buying a 2002 2500 24V from a local dealer. Is there any way to tell if the VP44 has be damaged by fueling issues?
other then looking for a wire tap no. you can see if they had a fueling box on it buy looking for a wire tap at the wires leading into the vp44. Johnwaytogo
You know, with the way some of these pumps can be, it would really only matter if the truck runs good, has good fuel pressure, mileage is decent, and starts well. Those are the things that are going to tell you that the VP44 is in good shape in an used truck. Very rarely does a VP44 just flat lock up when it shows signs of being in good shape. It does happen, but most guys have symtoms long before it actually kicks the bucket.
The truck has 109k, 6 spd, and the salesman says it runs great (but would he really tell me something different...it his job to sell vehicles) i haven't driven it yet, is there anything specific to look for(loping, lack of acceleration, defueling at WOT)? I'm in the market for a reliable truck with semi low miles, or new, but I love the 5.9 not a fan of the new 6.7 till its proven. Open to suggestions 5.9 12V or 24V? or wait for 6.7?
Lift Pump I wanted to mention two things, one, with the 24v 5.9 the lift pump came mounted on the block. The dealers have installed many conversion kits to relocate the pump into the fuel tank. I'm not a mechanic but in the 90's I was part owner of a repair facility and we saw lots of gas fuel injected cars with the fuel pump in the gas tank. The issue here is people don't realize that the pump needs fuel in the tank to dissipate the heat. If you constantly drive around with a near empty tank, you run the risk of overheating the fuel pump. That's what I was told and it made sense to me. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The second thing is please check out my ad in the trucks for sale section. I know you said your looking for low mileage but I went through all of the learning experiences that you will find on this forum. I installed a FASS after two lift pump failures, I took my vp44 off and had it rebuilt by a local business "DIESEL FUEL INJECTION" that has serviced the farming industry in this area for years. I replaced the TPS, I relocated the blowby hose after replacing the radiator, I had the trans rebuilt by "Roadmaster" in Chicago with all the correct parts for towing. I had the ECM reflashed when the converter wasn't locking up correctly. I just flushed the tranny after 48K miles and refilled it with Redline synthetic ATF, with the deep aluminum pan, capacity is an extra two quarts so that was $250+. I have installed a fuel guage, trans temp, boost guage and EGT guage. I have changed motor oil every 3-4k miles and I can safely say at least 80 % of the trucks mileage was on the Interstate. Differential has Royal Purple gear lube. My opinion is this diesel required a heck of a lot more maintenance than any gas truck I ever owned (and I'm 61) but when they are right, they do the job better than any gas truck I owned. They also get better mileage than any gas truck I ever owned. I have really enjoyed cruisin through the Pocono's, Rockies and every other up and down grade with the cruise on 63-65, 18-1900 rpm's in OD with about 10k lbs of car hauler behind me and feeling very safe and confident in my dually. thanks for your time.
