    336= crankshaft position sensor
1690= crankshaft position sensor does not agree with ECM Crank sensor

Sounds like you have a bad crankshaft sensor.

And the Dodge Dealer said that I need a new fuel pump

My 1999 3500 exhibits a similar problem. Quite randomly, the engine will drop to an idle while I am driving down the road. This happens regardless of whether I am using cruise control or simply maintaining speed with the fuel pedal. It will stay at an idle until I pump the pedal a few times. If I don't pump the pedal, it will idle for quite awhile.

I need to check the error message code but am encouraged to hear that it might be something other than a $3,000 fuel pump replacement, which is what the Dodge dealer's "Customor Rep" strenuously argued.

    Thanks,
    GLD

Check the codes. I might be the death code for the VP-44. If it is then it costs $$$ to get it fixed. You should be able to get it for less then $3000 though. Any diesel shop should be able to do it. The pump is generally $1000-1200 + labor.

    what's the VP-44?

    Hossbaby 50,

I will get the codes checked per your suggestion. What is the VP-44?

    Thanks.

It is the diesel fuel injection pump on these trucks.

gld: What you're describing is called dead pedal. You'll likely have the code p0216 present if/when you get it scanned. You likely need a new VP44 (injection pump = expensive) and a new LP (lift pump) which was likely the cause of the IP failure.

Do some searching/reading on the net (google or the like). I suggest these key words:
    - P0216
    - Lift pump
    - VP44
    - FASS
    - Dead pedal
    - APPS (accelerator pedal position sensor)
    - TPS (throttle position sensor - same as above, different term)

Also, do some reading on the 2nd gen forum on dieseltruckresource.com
    and read this: https://towrig.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2129
    Hope this helps.

i installed my cranksensor and it solved the problem.i did have to replace my fuel pressure regulator which was giving me a similiar problem like yours once. its known to go bad which you will have to replace the fuel pump.i bought the pump and replaced it myself which saved a lot of money versus taking it to the dealer.

How difficult was it to replace the pump? Do you need special tools or gauges or just patience?
