my 2000 PSD is dying when I let off on the pedal!! it's an intermittent problem but it's pretty damn scary when you pull up to an intersection, the engine dies and you have no brakes! It's happened both in forward and reverse.
So far, the engine starts right back up. The Check Engine Light has come on but goes away when you turn the key back to off and then restart. Ironically, the truck has been a bit harder to start over the past month or so. No Water In Fuel light. Fresh oil and fresh fuel filter too. The trucks runs great down the road. Any ideas? I plan to call dealer today. thanks

If its only when you let off the pedal, it could be a bad idle validation switch (IVS) or the throttle position sensor on the gas pedal. How does the truck run otherwise?

the truck runs great otherwise. purrs like a big cat down the road at rpm's above idle. It did have some hesitation/girgling/sputtering right after I started it back up again (after stalling) but then ran fine. I appreciate the advice. thanks.

to add insult to injury, the dealer wanted to charge me $1700 to fix all problems!
    1) cam sensor
    2) EBP (exhaust back pressure sensor)
    3) y-pipe/exhaust leak
    4) oil leak at intake tubes
    5) PVC valve bad

all just as I was bragging about how trouble-free this truck has been over the last 5 years, 44,00miles. I guess I should not complain...... :dunno:

since the truck is 2 months out of warranty and Ford wont do a damn thing, I took it to another Diesel repair shop.

Most of that stuff is easily done yourself. And for alot cheaper price. If you want info, and places to get the parts cheap, let me know. Good luck with it.

    Love the dealers

:doah: I know the cps is the only problem. The rest is the dealer way to more cash out of you. I have a 2000 ford it also has 44,000 on it. They all get oil on boots to intake and intercooler not a porblem. The exhaust back pressuer sensor is allways a problem but doesn't make any differance if it's working or not. The pvc??? There is no pvc on a 7.3L only a oil blow-by trap on the drivers side valve cover. This is where the Rocor mod would help you. It traps the oil settles it. Then it's sent back to the motor instead of into the intake to the turbo make all the oil on the boots in the first place.

pardon my ignorance but what is a "cps"?
should I replace the exhaust back pressure sensor?
are they cheap? easy to install?
make much/any difference on power or economy?
    (paid $3.50/gallon yesterday)
everybody/the mechanics keep calling it a PCV valve. rotfl
    thanks! waytogo

CPS is a camshaft position sensor. Its a very common part that fails on these trucks, with no real lifespan. Some last 100k, some last 10k. Anyway, www.powerstrokeshop.com has a good price on them. The Ford dealer's price will be outrageous. It is located on the front of the motor. Held on with a single bolt, and one connector on it.

The exhaust back pressure sensor is not a very cheep sensor but it does not cause any runablity problems eather. The 7.3L powerstroke doesn't use a pvc valve it has a breather off of the drivers side valve cover that vents to the intake hose from air filter to the turbo. There is a large wire mesh in this breather its like steal wool but the wire is larger and loosely packed. This is to slow the oil vapors down so they form into drops of oil and are not all pulled into the turbo but are returned to the motor. The Racor oil trap stops all the oil vapor at the valve cover and there is no oil that gets into the intake hose.
