I have started looking around for a tow rig and I have found some older Powerstrokes in my price range. The problem with them is they are kinda high in mileage. They are in the 200-250K range. They are in mid to later 90's older body style trucks. What is the average life expectancy of a Powerstroke motor? Is 200-250K alot of miles? This is assuming a well maintained motor. Thanks Harley
200-250K is getting up there for the motor, but it still has plenty of life in it. At that mileage the problem isnt so much the motor(if its been taken care of), its the rest of the truck.
About 3 months ago, I picked up a sweet 96 F350 Photo Here It came with impecable (sp?) maintenance records and just looked real clean. The biggest down side was the auto tranny. On a plus, the tranny had been rebuilt 3K before and I got the warrantee card. Only paid $9500 also. The big concerns with the F250/F350's is ball joints, the auto tranny, and the turbo. Mine came with a turbo saver unit that prevents the engine from shutting down unless cool enough.
The 7.3 is a very reliable and durable engine. 250,000 miles on a "STOCK" powerstroke is not a problem what so ever. As you already know, the Powerstroke is also know as the International T444e Medium duty diesel. The t444e aka powerstroke is still being sold in other countries including Canada. the only reason Ford stopped putting them in or trucks is because of the EPA. The Powerstroke is very capable of going 400to 500,000 miles if kept stock before an overhaul is called for. http://129.33.208.17/site_layout/engine/t444edetail.asp#durability
My grandfather has 301K on his first year PSD, a 95 F250. Original engine, original auto transmisssion, original turbo.
