Looking for a run around truck and I can get an 05 Ram quad cab for a good price from a friends dealership. I was wondering what everyone is getting in the way of mileage with their Hemi powered 1500?

A family friend of ours has the Daytona 1500, and he claims 10mpg daily. So the mileage isn't great.
EDIT: He doesn't have a tonneau and is running the 20 inch rims. That probably has something to do with the low miles. Those 20's are freakin heavy!

I just got rid of mine because of the mileage. Short bed short cab with the small wheels and it still got 10 in town 12 highway.

I am interested in real world mileage as well becuase I talk to some guys that say they get 13-15 in the city and 18-20 on the highway and they are stretching it I think becuase the rest of the guys say 10-12, which is what my worthless 5.9 gets and I am ready to get a diesel.
Also how bad does it drop off when you tow, like 2000-3000lbs.

I just traded my 2000 1500 5.9 tow rig for '03 cummins 2500.The gasser was a 5.9 with tons of mods(tri y headers, complete 3" exhaust with hi flow cat, cold air intake, custom throttle body, yadayadayada. It made tons of power/torque pulled 6000 pound trailer no problem, getting 9.8 mpg at 55 mph. Around town driving never netted any better than 10-12 mpg. On highway with no trailer,no more than 60 mph, regularly got 18-20 mpg.
My friends with 5.7 hemi's get no better in city or h/way. I can't wait to tow with the Cummins!

I've owned 4 Dodge full size trucks since 1976 a, 440, 318, 5.7, and now the Hemi, and they ALL got the same milage +1 or -1, 12-13 city 14-15, Highway. The big dogs can run, but you DO have to feed them. :)

My brother-in-law has a 2003 Hemi in his 2500 4x4. Gets 12.2 empty highway, and that's legit hand calculated. He now has a 2004 Dodge Cummins after watching my Cummins out pull his Hemi every single time. He tows a big trailer and got sick of getting 7mpg towing and the screaming downshifts on hills.

The Hemi is a fun engine in a car or 1500 truck. A blast really. Nice and snappy, but when it comes to a big load torque just flat out wins.

No doubt about it Chuck, when it comes time to put the twist to the ground the dizzys got it all over the gassers. I guess Honda said it best 30 some years ago, "different strokes for different folks". :)

The mileage will drop drastically when you tow with a gasser compared to a diesel. I would guess that pretty much any V-8 in a truck will be struggling to average anything above 15-16, anywhere.

On February 18th I bought my wife a 2008, 1500 QC, with the Big Horn package, 20" aluminum wheels, 4X4, and so on. In the begining of March we took in on a trip from our home town of Los Alamos, New Mexico to Salt Lake City, Utah and back. We averaged between 18 and 19 mpg and in town we are getting about 16 mpg. This truck has no modifications. After the first oil change I added a K&N filter but not the cold air intake just the drop in filter.

My truck gets around 15-16 city and around 18-20 highway.....I used it to pull my 95 12v home(live in Eaton,Ohio, picked up in Otsego,Michigan) on a 25 ft gooseneck with strong headwinds and got a very sad 6.7 mpg on the way home...the truck did great though...

I just got back from vacation in Florida with the wifes 06 megacab 2x2 hemi. We put @ 2400 miles on the odo and the overhead read 16.2 but hand cal. was 15.1. That was doing 75-90 mostly highway. We have a hard top flat cover on the back.
