Who has taken theirs out? Is it just there to keep the turbo noise down?

I took a look at mine when I did my first oil change and looks like it has to be pounded/popped out. I don't think I'll remove mine anytime soon, unless it's easier than it looks.

I think it's just a Dodge thing. At least they are the only ones I see talking about them...

If your talking about VVT (variable vane turbo), mine is to old for that. Otherwise, not sure what VNT is, but I believe you're right about us not having them.

So my turbo noise is as loud as it is gonna get in the factory setup?

Someday down the road I may swap out the exhaust fer somtin special...but not fer a while as I need to spend $$$ on other things..like a trialer and slide in camperwaytogo

Some people claim to be able to get more "noise" from the turbo with things like the AFE breather (I don't recommend you waste the money IMO), free flowing exhaust, and waste gate tweaks (be VERY careful with this one).

I took mine out . It's super easy - just pop out the internal snap ring and it's right there . It is louder but not too anoying . I have kept it out to remind me to look at the boost gauge while cruising on the interstates - The noise reminds me that I am using more go pedal than is needed usually .:)

How loud are we talking? I have heard people have noticed a slightly faster spool up with it out. Did you notice that?

My '03 VNT has had the silencer ring removed for 34K mis. It just pops out on the '03 Powerstroke and can and has been machined off of several '04's and '05's I know of. Different from the Cummins is we actually see some performance gains along with the noise. I would imagine though that the Cummins might see some differences?

We do see performance increases from it. I have heard slightly faster spool up time.

I can't say that I have felt anything from the seat of the pants stand point but it is noticably louder - even with the windows up .

The noise level is not anoying but it is obviuos when two comparable trucks are going down the road as to which one has the silencer ring removed .
