The last few days my truck has wanted to start off in 2nd gear. Only when it's cold though. I'll take off from a stop and I can feel it sluggish, then it down shifted into first and took off like normal. I know it's taking off in 2nd (I presume anyway) because I caught it once, slammed the shifter into manual 1st, and it down shifted from 2nd and took off. It's done it about four different times in the last few days. I've got 113K on my truck with the original transmission and oil, the oil is pretty darned black. :doah: I need to go and get it serviced so that way it has fresh oil in it so if it goes out my warranty company won't pull any crap on me and deny fixing it under warranty from neglect( bad oil). I'm thinking fresh oil will help it out anyway, or finish it off when the new ATF cleans it out.

Take it to a shop where they can perform a Tranny Flush and hope for the best. I know you already know this but it is not possible to change the transmission fluid too much. More often for a TowRig! :doah:

Yeah, I've always been told 25-30K on an ATF oil change. My tranny would have clean red fluid in it, but I've only had it for 13K of it's 113K life and the PO never had it serviced.

I've always been told that either the tranny needs to get serviced like it's supposed to or leave the old black fluid in it and DON'T change it. I've heard that the old fluid can build up deposits inside the tranny in different spots that actually have replaced different wear parts and fresh clean ATF will flush those deposits out causing internal hydro leaks and that will knock the tranny out. :doah: Kind of like how going to synthetic oil in an old engine usually causes a bunch of oil leaks. I hope that is true because I'd love for an oil change to knock mine out so I get a new trans under warrranty before it expires. rotfl

For the most part I'd have to say that is an old wives tale as far as new fluid causing problems. If it ever did the problem was already on it's way.
Now for synthetics in worn engines that is some what true due to the fact that the synthetic molicules are smaller than conventional oil and will cause leaks and noticable sound on worn bearings. I have a Toyota with HIGH mileage like most Toyota owners :D and it does not like even synthetic blend :doah: . Once I went back to a petrolium oil it got alot quieter rotfl .
Like you said before change the fluid and hope she "blows up" before the warranty is up. Either way change the fluid! :poke:

Most likely it's either the governor pressure solenoid or switch. Simple fix really but gotta drop the pan and I believe the valve body. Dealer cost is high but aftermarket is reasonable.

Go do a search on 'that other site'. rotfl

I had the tranny service like mentioned. They changed 6.5 quarts of oil, new pan gasket, and new filter. There really wasn't all that much material in the filter, that looked fairly decent. THey did find the 2nd gear band to be a little loose. They scanned it but no codes.

The new 6.5 quarts of fresh oil (power flushing the converter, lines, and cooler was another $50 bucks) and tightening up the 2nd gear band seemed to help it a lot. The owner of the tranny shop figured the old burnt up oil had gummed up a valve or something.

No more gear skipping and It never got hot on me going to blazer fest, I was pulling my tailer with K5 and gear which was probably about 8K worth of junk behind me. Did just fine pulling Pacheko pass and on the way home I pulled mostly in overdrive, after pulling a small hill in OD I pulled over at the bottom, no smell of burnt fluid or any signs of overheating that I could see. I don't have a guage. Seemed to work pretty well for me and thats with 113K and it's first oil change about 300 miles ago. waytogo Oh yeah, it was 106* outside too.

I'm not suprised, it was REALLY hot and the 12v's don't have the nice aluminum radiators like the 24v's do. My temp did great. The only place it got a little warm on me was pulling Pacheko, the the temp display went to 106* as soon as I started pulling the hill. Got to 210* and I backed off the floor, kept it at about 200* around 40mph. The rest of the way I ran 190-195* all the way home. :D
