Anyone have any comments negative or posative about towing in tandem. Here's my idea:

    1-Ton 4x4 truck
    78 Scout on 15' trailer
    Small Pop-up camper behind

This set-up would be very versatile for me and that's a high priority on my list of must haves.

However safety is my first priority. So I guess my question is; is towing in tandem unsafe?

I may be wrong, but from what I understand, the first trailer has to be a gooseneck or 5th wheel, not a bumper pull. What type of trailer do you have to haul the Scout? I assumed a bumper pull since you said it was 15ft long.

I would also second that the first trailer has to be a gooseneck style for it to be legal.

REALLY! that's interesting. Any idea why?

I have no trailer now. I'm just trying to gather info before I start my purchases.

    Here's one that's pretty short.http://www.kaufmantrailersales.com/flatbeds.htm

Check out the Lowboy Series. It comes a short as 16' which is about what I would want.

So would that work for tandem towing?

The price seems a lot lower than I expected to pay. Are these "cheap" trailers or do I just not have a clue??

It is mainly for stability reasons. A bumper pull trailer alone is pretty stable when setup right. Teh same trailer, in a gooseneck style is much better suited to stable towing. 2 bumper pull trailers in tandem, when swaying would turn ito a disaster real fast. It is simply for safety and stability.

Cliffy, in most states, the front trailer needs to be a goose or 5th wheel. I have seen many people tow 2 bumper pull trailers back to back out here (including myself).

On that note, I saw the craziest thing leaving Moab last Easter. So many guys pull there heeps behind there travel trailers, and I saw one guy towing a heep from a towbar behind his 5th wheel camper. I have to imagine that would be a handful in some wind.

Yeah, I've thought about going the flat-tow route, but I want to make sure I get home safe in the event of a serious rollover or hardcore damage. Thanks for the idea though.

I actually thought I might HAVE TO flat-tow for a little while, until I saw how reasonably priced trailers were.
