For all of you with the 4speed auto, does your tranny shift smoothly? Mine seems to downshift hard and feels like it slips into gear a lot. I don't know if this is because it is a heavy duty truck tranny or what?

I have 12k on it and want to take it to the dealer if this is not normal.....

I have an 02, shifts pretty smooth still, not hard but not exactly soft either.. almost 76,000 on it. Does it feel the same when your pulling?

It actually feels better while towing. Maybe I am being paranoid or something. I will see if my bud will let me drive his 04'.......

    hard downshifts

Has it been like that since new or is it getting gradually worse? you may need a adjustment or have a valve body issue but my guess it that its nothing major. You should not be feeling hard downshifts though, are you running a chip of anything that may alter shift points?

Not running a chip, but I do have 35" tires. Will the oversized tires mess witht the tranny like that?

Those tires could change the shift points causing it to downshift earlier at a higher RPM letting you to feel the downshift more, that's not a big concern for the trans if you can live with it.

Just take it to the dealer and have them recalibrate for the new tires. If it's a good dealer they won't charge for it. Just need to know approximate "turns per mile" which can be gotten from your tire dealer, or you could measure the circumference of the tire and divide a mile by that (make sure units are the same i.e. all in inches, feet, etc). If that doesn't solve the problem, hey you're already at the dealer and can mention the problem to them so it's at least on record...

The other thing is your tires are making you use a little more power to get moving and you are making the computer think you have a load on it. May be a contributing factor along with the small adjustment Dave mentioned.
