typical truck requirements to get hired/leased?

    Looking for some general guidelines as to what truck requirments most companies have. Not as an independant O/O but getting hired or leased to a trucking company to run loads for them...if I'm understanding the terms and industry correctly.

    Requirement with regard to age of truck, mileage, 3/4 or 1T, SRW or DRW, etc is acceptable to most companies. I understand every company is different but it would help to know in general what a trucking company expects of your truck if you wish to get hired on or leased to them.

    1 ton dually is pretty much the demanded vehicle as most insurance companies don't even want to insure them. Not to mention, you have to look at the weight and towing ability of the tractor. Just to clarify, if you are driving your truck, and are leased to a company, you are still an owner operator. You are going to find that most companies out there are terrible about paying their drivers, take over 20% commissions, and don't keep you loaded as often as they say.

I am always happy to share some legitimate information with anyone who is considering this. It is a very tough business and if you are not well established or with a well established company, don't even think about it.

    I had seen your web site before. Pretty interesting concept. All you do is tow loads/trailers that are ready to go?

    My neighbor just started hotshoting part-time recently. He is leased or whatever the correct term is to a local trucking company. He runs with their sign on his truck and gets 75% of what the company charges the customer for the run plus fuel costs/surcharges.

    I assume the other 25% is what covers the parent company's insurance/registration/authority/etc he is running under and the company's "commision/profit".

    But that's just one company and situation.

    If you are driving your own truck but "leased" to a trucking company, are you running under their insurance, DOT numbers and such? Are you essentially a "sub-contractor"?
