I don't know how it is in other states, but we have weight classes for truck license plates. I run the 10K plates just to be safe in case I ever get busted when I'm hauling or towing something heavy. Every other 2500HD or 3500 I see run the 7k plates, either because they're cheaper or because they'll never haul anything more than a couple of boards. The lady at the license branch didn't even ask me, she just went and got a 7k plate. When I asked about the heavier plates, she said "well if you REALLY want one you can have it." Like I didn't need it or something. I said of course I want it, I want to be legal! I was under the impression you had to be plated for your GVWR. :dunno:

12k plates on mine. But it worked out well, cause in Illinois you dont have to pay vehicle sales tax when you get commercial plates. :D
