I just purchased a 99 Dodge CTD 2500. The dealership pulled the code P0216. Fuel Injection Pump Timing. The dealership couldnt seem to tell me what exactly i needed to replace. One mechanic told me just the injectors, another didnt know what the code meant.

So, ive done some research, im finding it has to do with the VP44. But im getting mixed signals as what exactly to replace and is needed off previous threads. So if this could be cleared up for me as i am very new to the diesel scene.

Also, the ABS and brake light are on most of the time, they turn off from time to time. Fluids are full. What does this signal?

And once when i started it up and took off, the air bag light stayed on, the ping noise came on, and the speedo didnt work, but i could drive it down the road no problem. Stop, cut the engine and turn it back over and everything is fine.

    thanks!

"Fuel injection pump timing failure" is what a 0216 code stands for. What it really means is that you need a new VP44 injection pump, what everyone fears. It's no big deal in my book, as it's just money thats needed to fix it. As a mechanic myself, 75% of the battle is just trying to actually diagnose the problem, and a VP44 is fairly easy to figure out. $1500 or so should have you a new pump installed.

YOur ABS problem is likely in an ABS sensor down on the axles.

Don't know why your speedo quit working along with the seatbelt deal....:doah:

You have the code of death for the VP44. Not a big deal to replace, but expensive. Also, the lift pump is the cause of the failure 99 times out of 100. You will have to UPGRADE your lift pump set up as well as replace the VP44. PM me if you need some prices. Install is straight forward.

ABS light - have your brakes checked. I will bet your rear drums are worn down or darned close. If the rear brakes over extend they will set the light.

Speedo has me stumped. If the brakes are fine I think RJF is dead on with the speed sensor on the axle, possibly causing both issues.

i think i might have an answer for the speedo thing and the abs light. if ur truck is like mine it has only 2 weel abs (which really sucks aroud here durring the winter time) i would personaly rather have none at all but thats a different story for a different time. neways i unhooked the sensor for the rear end thinking if there was no input there would be no abs right?? seemed reasonable but after i unhooked it i had no speedo. the tone gear on the rear end work the speedo towaytogo . so i would start with a new sensor or have the truck scaned it will tell u whats wrong.

Find another dealer! THose guys are gonna cost you. The P0216 should be a "no brainer" for them to diagnose + fix. Scary IMO if they don't even know what to do next!

    Yesterday was a nightmare!

Took the truck to Just brakes to have the brake pads replaced and serviced since i no longer have the time to do it myself. They go back, im watching them, and they cant even get the rear drums off the axle. The pads were all metal, and the drums had such a lip on them they broke the hardware holding the pads just to get the drums off. The fronts are even worse. Needs calipers, rotors, drums, pads, shoes, wheel cylinders, EVERYTHING. $1500 for them to do it. I contacted the dealership who did the look over for me and told me the brakes needed service but were safe, inyet they werent. They are looking into why the mechanic said what he did. And im gonna try and have them reemburse me for the brake job since they cannot sell a non-safe vehicle.

VP44 replaced, expensive but i expected it. Not to much of a big deal other than money.

The speedo and airbag light is caused from the ignition getting "stuck" in the possition nothing has contact for power, shift the key alil and all is fine.

Im happy with the truck overall, just got to spend some money in the process to get it into top shape.

Hmm, yeah the truck never should have sold with brakes like that.

The VP44 was easy like I said, just some money.

Don't feel too bad, most of us have had to put some money into these things after buying them, not neccessarely on fun stuff, but items just as you are talking about.
