I have an edge comp box,pdr rv275 injectors, afe intake and 4" exhaust. My egts are getting to hot in the summer pulling my camper. Pdr says a modified hx-35 would be perfect.I am limited because of my pac brake.I am happy with fuel milage and pwer just not my egts.
ONly thing I can think of is the HX35/40 hybrid. I don't really like this turbo much. The HX35 shaft is a little small for the HX40 wheel and it doesn't take more than a few good chuffs or full throttle lifts to snap that shaft and burn up the turbo. Personally, if you are dead set on keeping the turbo mounted pac, a Snow Water/Meth kit would be perfect. The water will cool your egts back down, and it only runs when you want it to. Use windshield washer fluid. Its about 10-15% meth, and the meth will give you a nice little power increase, and with the water cooling the egts you should be just fine. How much boost are you getting, and what year truck? Stick or auto.
My truck is a 99 5-speed with a 13"con ofe southbend clutch, edge box,rv275 injectors.afe intake and 4" exhaust.
turbo? I have a very similar set up. 02 2500 with afe, 4 inch, 150 injectors and comp box. Like you, my only issue are the EGT's. My research is directed towards tubos, snow or bigger intercoler...which is the best? There are basically three aspects to that question, expense, which cools the most and by how much and what don't I know, I.E. reliability factors, can I get the 7 gallon resevoir on the snow system to fit and how long will it last......all the "what if stuff"
That is exactly what I am going thru. I use this truck for camping and I need it to be as reliable as possible. I am going to try the modified hx-35 from PDR I will post how it works for me.I can get the hx-35 and the snow for the price of one of those other turbos.PDR says for the money an intercooler is not worth it for my application. We shall see.It will be a couple weeks till I get my turbo, they are out of stock.
You need something like a Super B Special, SPS 62/14, or shoot...even a set of BD twins would work well. You've got way more fuel than any stock HX35 turbo is going to handle, with or without water/meth. Is your truck and auto with the HY35? I can't imagine how bad EGT's would be with that much fuel and that small of a turbo. Water/meth would help, but is a band-aid, and I mean trying to put a band-aid on a broken arm... A set of twins would probably hold you 1200* or less when towing and racing. Adding just a different intercooler would likely be the least effective route.
My twins keep me plenty cool with lots of power. Defiently, look at teh Super B single or Special. The single is upgradeable to the twins kit later.
turbos Sounds like with your advise I at least have a place to start. I am curious though, If an intercooler can drop me 200 egt's why is that a bad option? Or is just not worth the cost? Also, I keep hearing about turbo lag once I upgrade. Do the setups you mentioned minimilize the lag, I.E. the super B special or Bd twins? Also if you get a chance read my new thread about 2002 burning oil.... any ideas? thanks!
I can't really say much about aftermarket intercoolers, as to the fact that I don't know much about them. Your main problem is the size of the exhaust housing on the factory turbo, before even thinking about the compressor side. You can't get the hot exhaust out fast enough with that small of a housing, combined with the amount of fuel you can move, you are going to have higher EGT's and high drive pressure, which is hard on head gaskets. With a Super B turbo, you are going to get a larger exhaust housing that will make it easier on the engine to breath going out, lowering EGT's, and the hot rod compressor side is going to deliver more air that is cooler anyway to the engine, also helping lower EGT's and make more power. An intercooler is simply just going to get the intake air a little cooler, marginally helping EGT's, and maybe helping power slightly..??..
has anyone had any experience with the Banks Quick-Turbo / wastegate assembly? It is a bit cheaper but I have no idea if it would help in this situation...
banks= no thanks spend your money else where. i have delt with them. customer serves sucks and while there intercoolers might be good the turbo's i would stay away from and try maybe a dodgezilla or some type of a hybrid
