Who's running a modified auto? What is done to it and who did it? Do you notice better driveability around town? Towing? Racing? I still have the stock 47RE with 107K on the truck and am fairly happy with it(haven't had any problems) but I notice it is lazy to down shift and the converter locks and unlocks frequently between 30-40mph.
Building the auto in our 1997 12 valve was one of the best performance mods period. Felt like the truck gained about 75hp. Suncost tc with matching valve body, shift kit, 4th clutch and steal, ATS deep pan. www.DunksPerformance.com
I run a BD X-converter and have a Transgo VB kit....The tranny has upgraded clutches, billet steel drums and heavy duty planetaries.....no billet input or output shafts, though - which I regret now! IMO, the tranny made one of the biggest improvements in performance - it really lets all that CTD torque get to the ground!.....The truck is way snappier around town and the lock up clutch seems to hold just about any amount of torque that you can throw at it! You will really feel the difference in a good tranny and converter if the motor has already been bombed.
Wow, I'ved heard that before that just a well built auto will make the truck pickup some power even at stock power levels, the aftermarket converters and valve bodies really do a make a big difference than. opcorn:
The right way to do it is to also upgrade the 3rd gear drum, and basically do a rebuild to the tranny while upgrading. Just adding the TC and VB is apparently still leaving a couple of weak links. I'm doing the full monty for about $2600...........
