I talked to Gale Banks Engineering today and told them our issues which are; to engage the brake we have to slightly depress the throttle and if you go too far it will not engage either. You have to get it just perfect or you have nothing.

Answer: The brake works off the APPS which sends a voltage through a blue wire to the brake and the brake will only work with voltages between .4 and .7. It is their opinion that the APPS is putting out less than .4 volts at idle and when we slightly depress the throttle it raises the voltage into the operating range. By giving a little too much throttle, we are exceeding the .7 volts which disengages the brake.

Repair: Test the line voltage of the blue wire at the brake at idle to see if we are getting .4 to .7 which the guy at Banks said is really not necessary because it can only be one thing, defective APPS. Therefore, he recommends replacing the original factory APPS and that should correct the problem.

Just thought I would post this to help others in the future. waytogo By the way, anyone know where to buy a good APPS?

Sometimes a good cleaning will get them working proper again. Trick is getting them apart and back together. I lost the link on how to do it though. Those apps can get quiet pricey $$.

    Banks Exhaust Brakes

I have not been happy with the Banks exhaust brake that I installed. The problems have been with the exhaust brake turn on the brake pump does not come on when I turn the key on. Then after I have started the engine and apply some throttle the brake will close. (A little have to drive with he exhaust brake closed.) Let up on the throttle and the exhaust brake will open, just back wards of the way it suppose to work. Towing my Th wheel in the mountains I had so much trouble with it that the transmission went into limp mod a couple of times, hope I didn't burn any thing up. Since then I have totally disconnected it and put the truck back to factory, but now it shifts hard and at 25-30 it warders between gears.

Sorry you're having problems with the exhaust brake Ken. I was going to ask you about that while in Moab as it didn't sound right. Hopefully you get them worked out. Let me know if I can help.

On a side note....very glad I went with my Pac-Brake...it's worked flawlessly and I love it. Come to think of it....Jason was the one who recommended it over the Banks brake. Yet another thing he helped me with. waytogo

I have the Jacobs and It has worked flawlessly for 200,000kms (120,000miles) I also use it for a quicker warm up in the winter.
