    Mario,

I went thru all this confusing stuff for weeks after I got my ticket and should have remembered...

There were major changes in the laws a while back as to requirements for regular classes and up to 26k. I did stop out on the interstate today and had an NC weight dude refresh my memory.

Your were right about the over 10k needing a different class license. You do not need a CDL but a class A or B.

Sorry for the rudeness on my part. We need more helpful folks like yourself.waytogo

Now please explain this away. This is the rear of my wife's license she got today in NC. No matter how you read it a class C is good for trailer and towing vehicle with gross combined of 26k or less.

    Sorry

    You stated this,

I was wondering what states require a class A or B to tow over 10k?

    Crete,

I actually am confused. The back of my wife's license states you don't need one as long as your total is under 26k. But other paperwork I have seen says over 10k trailer you need B or A.

    Sorry

    Cumminz,

I have read over this post because i was researching whether or not any states other than Cali require you to have anything other a regular license and the Google search led me to your post. Quite simply, the officer was an idiot and you should have fought the ticket. Nothing p's me off more than those who are supposed to enforce the law, who are completely clueless to it. The NC CDL handbook states clearly that if the GVWR and GVWR of the trailer exceed 26,001 lbs, and the trailer being towed is over 10k, then you need a special license. If the combo is under 26k, then under no circumstances do you need a CDL. You can haul a 14k trailer behind a 11,400 GVWR truck like my 06 Chevrolet dually for a total GCVWR of 25400 and be legal in every state other than Commifornia with just your regular license. That fact that you were not hauling commercially when your were pulled over further proves the officer did not have a clue.

Go to page 9 and print it out and carry with you. http://http://www.iowafarmbureau.com/programs/commodity/pdf/truckguide.pdf

The problem is, I have heard stories similar to yours from people in several different states who have been pulled over and ticketed by officers who don't know the law. Couple that with the people who they pulled over weren't sure and the ticket never gets fought. People just think the officer is judge and jury , pay the ticket and go on. Then the next poor soul gets ticketed by the same clueless officer and the state gets extra revenue. Good day and I hope this helps in the future at least. :D

    Towing a RV

Just looked at the rquirerments for CDL in Virginia and it states: "Commercial driver's license requirements don't apply to: vehicles operated by persons only for personal use, such as recreational vehicles and rental moving vans"

A commercial motor vehicle is classified as a singel vehicle with a gross vehicel weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more or a combo of vehicles with a gross combo weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more if the vehicle(s) being towed has a (GVWR) of more than 10.000 pounds.
